SCIENCE 4 ALL – Padova 2023

Embarking on an aquatic symphony, the University of Padua recently saw three innovative projects—DeuteroNoise, DIAPHONIA, and Orchestra—join forces during the Science for All 2023 event in Chioggia. In an immersive laboratory tailored for children aged 6 to 13, the teams delved into the mesmerizing world of underwater sounds, shedding light on the potential consequences of human-made noise on marine life.

The event kicked off with young participants submerging themselves in the captivating sounds of marine creatures, setting the stage for a thought-provoking game. Children exchanged their favourite colours in both serene and noisy settings, offering a vivid lesson in the challenges of effective communication amid ambient noise—a pertinent analogy to the struggles faced by marine life.

Providing a hands-on encounter, a tank equipped with an underwater speaker showcased the intricate nature of sound in water. This technology, funded through the projects, highlighted that underwater sound extends beyond mere auditory perception, encompassing particle motion—a phenomenon with profound implications for marine animals.

Following the engaging activities, participants reflected on the substantial impact of noise pollution, briefly discussing the crucial role played by JPI Oceans projects in understanding this critical issue.
Looking ahead to the 2024 edition of Science for All, the University of Padua is committed to unveiling initial findings from these groundbreaking projects. Stay tuned for updates as they persist in their mission to safeguard the acoustic environments of oceans and their inhabitants.
