Harbour porpoise inner ear studies awarded
In a remarkable advancement for marine mammal research, Laura Rojas, a promising young scientist, has been honoured with the prestigious Best Student Award at the 35th European Cetacean Society Conference held in Catania, Italy. Her groundbreaking work, titled “Inner ear of harbour porpoise using synchrotron phase-contrast imaging,” has captivated the scientific community and promises profound implications for understanding marine mammal physiology.
The award was sponsored by the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering (JMSE).
Laura’s research delves into the intricate inner ear structures of harbour porpoises. By harnessing the power of synchrotron phase-contrast imaging, a cutting-edge non-destructive technique, Laura and her team have unlocked unprecedented insights into the cochlear soft tissues of these enigmatic creatures.
The findings, presented with remarkable clarity at a high spatial resolution of 2 μm voxel size, unveil both normal and altered anatomical features previously unseen. Conducted at DESY/HEREON in Hamburg, this pioneering approach marks a significant milestone in marine mammal research, offering a glimpse into the subtle nuances of their auditory systems.
Laura’s work not only sheds light on the inner workings of harbour porpoises but also holds promise for broader applications in marine mammal conservation and welfare. By detecting potential cases of hearing loss and understanding the intricate anatomy of their inner ears, scientists can develop targeted conservation strategies to safeguard these magnificent creatures for future generations.
As we celebrate Laura’s well-deserved recognition, we eagerly anticipate the ripple effects of her research across the scientific community.

A Unique Opportunity at DESY-Hereon
In the world of scientific research, opportunities to utilize cutting-edge technology can lead to groundbreaking discoveries. One such opportunity arose in September 2023, when the research team of the Institute of Terrestrial and Aquatic Wildlife Research (ITAW) was granted access to the facilities at DESY-Hereon in Hamburg. This prestigious research center is renowned for its advanced imaging techniques, providing a unique platform for scientists to delve deeper into their research subjects.
The Science Spritz
The Science Spritz Celebrating a momentous occasion, our colleagues recently marked the fourth event of “The Science Spritz” at the PUB Discanto in Sottomarina, Chioggia. This collaborative initiative between the Departments of Biology and BCA at the University of Padova unfolds monthly, providing a platform for scientists to bridge the gap between their aquatic and […]

Moin Morgen Public Event – Büsum, Germany
In July 2023, an exciting public scientific event named Moin Morgen took place in Büsum, northern Germany. Our colleagues from the Institute for Terrestrial and Aquatic Wildlife (ITAW) took the opportunity to enlighten the audience about various threats to marine life, with a particular focus on the potential impacts of underwater noise. To aid their presentation, Laura Rojas Cortes and Maria Morell collaborated on a visually appealing poster that showcased the DIAPHONIA project and our approach to research.
A Promising Start
First General Assembly Marks Milestone in DIAPHONIA.
After the Kick-off meeting last February in Brussels at JPI Oceans Headquarters, DIAPHONIA has had it first General Assembly Meeting. This time, we met online and finalized crucial bureaucratic issues as important milestones that allow the partner to focus on the research with great enthusiasm and determination, paving the way for an intensified focus on the project’s core research objectives.
JPI Oceans Kick-off
On February 14-15, the five awarded JPI Oceans projects attended the Kick-off meeting, which took place at the University Foundation in Brussels. After an Introduction by the JPI Oceans Management Board, the Call Secretariat, and the Representative of the European Commission, DG Environment, the five project coordinators, including DIAPHONIA’s Sandro Mazzariol (picture above) presented their […]
